Malawi Rotary Cancer Run 2026: Every Step Matters in the Fight Against Cancer

The Malawi Rotary Cancer Run 2026, hosted by the Rotary Club of Bwaila–Lilongwe in partnership with Centenary Bank, was more than a race — it was a movement of hope in the fight against cancer. Under the banner "Every Step Matters," participants walked and ran together for awareness, remembrance, and support. After the event, we surveyed our participants to understand who they are, why they ran, and how they connected with the cause. Here's what we learned. A movement driven by connection When we asked how people heard about the run, social media led the way at 54.7%, followed by personal recommendations from friends at 18.7% and fellow Rotary members at 10.7%. Churches and parishes, Centenary Bank, and local jogging groups such as Joggers on the Move also helped spread the word. The message is clear: social media and personal connections are driving this movement. Running with purpose Of the 60 participants who shared why they run, the reasons were deeply personal. Twenty-six ran for awareness and hope, 18 ran in memory of someone lost, and 15 ran for a family member currently living with cancer. Five participants ran as cancer survivors themselves. Hope. Memory. Love. Strength. Every reason matters. A community effort More than half of participants (52%) came on their own, while 40% brought friends or family — including groups of one to two people, three to five people, and larger corporate and community teams. Social jogging groups added to the collective energy on the day. Choosing how to take part Participants took part in a range of activities. The 10K Run was the most popular at 41.3%, closely followed by the 21.1K Run at 37.3%. The 5K Fun Run drew 20% of participants, with others joining aerobics, general attendance walks, and awareness talks and health screenings.
